I won't venture into the cliched territory of how strange it is to look back on old work, but maybe just say that looking at these images is like slipping on an old t-shirt, threadbare and perfect in its comfortable decay.

"A Scanner Darkly" Posters

Unused poster artwork. I did a couple of these, but this is my favorite.

The Cannes Film Festival version of the poster. Interestingly, this image is not actually from the film; although I eventually animated the scene this represents, the artwork was a still I did during the first week or so I was on the project. The film version is greatly simplified.

The final "Bob Arctor" teaser poster. Not having to animate this image meant that I could be more detailed and really design the sculpt of his face without worrying about how it would move. I spent over a year drawing Keanu Reeves (almost exclusively) but at production's end this was one of the last images I drew of him, and it's the one I'm happiest with.

You wouldn't believe how quickly this piece of animation was produced if I told you, so let's just say it was a serious rush job. Mark Packard is responsible for the fantastic audio; I'm always amazed at his aural prowess and sense of humor - I don't know anyone else quite so eager to take an impossible deadline and turn it into a chance to shine. I did the animation by myself on this one, holed up in Shanta's house while he burned in the desert, Ari administering grotesque doses of Red Bull and smokes. I think it was worth the pain, though.

Way back in 2003-04 I did some production and creature design for Jason Bounds' dirty, nasty lil undead paranoia movie,Day X. Originally titled "Citadel of Flesh" and then "Citadel of Fear", I didn't know what to expect from his über-low budget blood bucket, but I'll be damned if he didn't walk away with a Best Director award from the Rhode Island Film Festival and promptly secure distribution for a damn fine flick that cost less than a set of orthodontic braces. An early "Gaunt" design. I had undergone surgery the week before I drew this (appendectomy!), and I still get warm and fuzzy remembering how warm and fuzzy the drugs made me...

A much later "Gaunt" design that called for a much "wetter" overall appearance. Ultimately, this design was only used for a handfull of creatures, due to its production cost.
